Summary
A monochrome photograph showing a full length image of Edith Teresa Hulton in Florence, Italy on 2nd May 1916. She is facing the camera and standing in front of a building covered in climbing roses. The sun is shining and she is wearing a long plain white dress with low heeled shoes with bows on the front. She is wearing a dark choker and hat which is decorated with white ribbons. She is carrying a dark bag in her left hand. Draped from her left shoulder is a tri-coloured sash which falls to her right hip. “Maggiolata Villa Medici Firenze 2 Maggio 1916” is written in pencil beneath the picture. Photograph Number 18 of 20 photographs, on Page 19 of Edith Teresa Hulton’s Personal Album: Zona di Guerra October 1915 – May 1916 (see CMS Number 610239.1). The previous album page which is page 18 is blank. Edith Teresa Hulton (1890-1972), later Lady Berwick, worked as a Red Cross volunteer in a variety of locations in the Italian war zone during World War I. She married Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick of Attingham (1877-1947) on 30th June 1919 in Venice, Italy. 'Maggiolata' means Spring Festival, and was held in May. The Villa Medici in Florence was the home of Edith Teresa Hulton’s friend Lady Sybil Cutting.
