Summary
A carte de visite (CDV) monochrome photograph of Gioconda Hulton standing in a sandolo. Behind her can be seen a second sandolo and beyond that some steps and a building. Written in pencil below photograph: 'Gio May 1907 by Augusto'. Photograph 7 of 227 contained in Volume 3 of Costanza Hulton’s personal photograph albums (1906 - 1919). Gioconda Mary Hulton was the elder sister of Edith Teresa Hulton, later Lady Berwick (1890-1972). A sandolo is propelled in the same way as a gondola, in this case by a man at the back, wielding a long oar. The location is probably the canal at the west side of Campo SS Giovanni e Paolo, in front of the entrance to the former Scuola di San Marco. The photographer, as in National Trust Inventory Number 610177.5, was ‘Augusto’. He was one of the Hultons’ house servants.
Provenance
8th Lady Berwick collection; bequeathed to the National Trust by Edith Teresa Hulton, Lady Berwick (1890-1972)
