Summary
A monochrome photograph of William Stokes Hulton and his younger daughter Edith Teresa Hulton aboard a sandolo on a canal. The sandolo is in the background of the photo and William Hulton is standing up while Edith Teresa is sitting. The oarsman can also be seen, and the boat lies alongside steps leading to a large building, which in the context of the inscription must be Palazzo Contarini dal Zaffo, which is on the Canal Grande. Written in pencil above photograph: 'W & Bim at the Johnstons' and below photograph: 'by Mrs Hatton July 07'. Photograph 11 of 227 contained in Volume 3 of Costanza Hulton’s personal photograph albums (1906 - 1919). 'Bim' is short for Bimbele, the family nickname for Edith Teresa Hulton. She became Lady Berwick when she married Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick of Attingham (1877-1947) on 30 June 1919. ‘The Johnstons’ are John Humphreys Johnstone and his wife Anne who lived at the Palazzo Contarini in Venice. The photographer was Enid Hatton, an old friend of the Hultons. See also National Trust Inventory Numbers 610177.10 and 610177.13.
