Summary

A monochrome photograph of Gioconda Mary Hulton (1887-1940) with her sister Edith Teresa Hulton (1890-1972) and another girl identified as Leni, presumably a local servant, standing by a fence with a goat on a lead in front of them. Gioconda Hulton is on the left of the group when looking at the photo and is holding the goat's lead. Edith Teresa Hulton is standing on the right of the group. Written in ink underneath the photograph: 'Gio, Leni & Bim' and 'the same'. Photograph 40 of 134 contained in Volume 2 of Costanza Hulton's personal photograph albums (1901 - 1906). ‘Bim’ was the family nickname of Edith Teresa Hulton who became Lady Berwick when she married Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick of Attingham (1877-1947) on 30 June 1919. 'the same' refers to details of the photographer and location written under another photograph - see National Trust Inventory Number 610168.37. This photograph was taken by Richard Freer Austin in Mittenwald, a resort in Bavaria. It is assumed to have been taken in August 1903.

Provenance

8th Lady Berwick collection; bequeathed to the National Trust by Edith Teresa Hulton, Lady Berwick (1890-1972).
