Summary
A 19th century brass chestnut roaster incorporating a handle attached to an oval shaped box. The oval shaped box has a hinged lid with small holes in it (similar to a colander). Chestnuts would be roasted to be used in recipes in the kitchen – for making forcemeats for example, and Christmas stuffing. Chestnuts would also be used in the making of sugary sweetmeats and for eating from the shell. Chestnuts would be used in both the kitchen and the stillroom kitchen of a mansion like Attingham. The chestnuts would either be placed in the oven or held over the fire or hotplate.
Provenance
Purchased for the National Trust at Attingham by Richard Batho for the restoration of the Victorian Kitchen circa 2010.
