Summary
A monochrome photograph of Gioconda Mary Hulton (1887-1940) and her sister Edith Teresa Hulton (1890-1972) standing on a balcony. Gioconda is looking forwards while Edith Teresa looks downwards. There are two potted plants on the balcony wall, another plant behind the girls and plant leaves are visible in the bottom left foreground of the picture. Written in ink underneath the photograph 'Gioconda & Bimbele on our balcony 1893' and also 'M. de Pury'. Photograph 30 of 102 contained in Volume 1 of Costanza Hulton's personal photograph albums (1886 - 1901). Gioconda and Edith Teresa were the daughters of William Stokes Hulton (1852-1921) and Costanza (‘Zina’) Hulton (née Mazini) (1863–1939); Edith Teresa Hulton married Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick of Attingham (1877-1947) on 30 June 1919. 'Bimbele' was Edith Teresa Hulton’s family nickname. The photograph was taken at the Hulton family home in Venice. Their address was Calle della Testa 6383, San Zanipolo and the family referred to the house as Casa Hulton; it was previously known as Ca’ Donà dalle Rose. M de Pury who took this photograph was Baroness (Marie Amélie) Mathilde de Pury (1859-1928), a painter, married to Edmond Jean de Pury. See also National Trust Inventory number 610136.30.
