Summary
A monochrome photograph with an expanse of water in the foreground and the prow of a gondola also visible. To the rear there is a group of people standing and sitting next to a statue, including a small child who is assumed to be Gioconda Mary Hulton (1887-1940) standing next to a woman dressed in black who is assumed to be called Giulia. Written in ink underneath the photograph: 'Gioconda and Giulia 1889 R. Austin'. Photograph 14 of 102 contained in Volume 1 of Costanza Hulton's personal photograph albums (1886 - 1901). Gioconda Mary Hulton was the elder sister of Edith Teresa Hulton, later Lady Berwick. The photograph was taken by Richard Freer Austin, husband of Harriet Alyne Austin (née Hulton), elder sister of William Stokes Hulton, Gioconda and Teresa Hulton’s father. The photograph was taken in Venice where the Hulton family lived at Calle della Testa 6383, San Zanipolo. The family referred to the house as Casa Hulton; it was previously known as Ca’ Donà dalle Rose. The actual location of this photograph appears to be Campo SS Giovanni e Paolo, in front of the family home.
