Summary
A monochrome photograph of William Stokes Hulton (1852-1921) on board a gondola passing a building where washing is hanging on a line. Written in ink underneath the photograph: 'Willy & "Nane Duro" Venice 1889 R. Austin'. Photograph 11 of 102 contained in Volume 1 of Costanza Hulton's personal photograph albums (1886 - 1901). William Stokes Hulton was the father of Edith Teresa Hulton, later Lady Berwick. 'Nane Duro' is an Italian (Venetian) phrase meaning 'hard dwarf'; here possibly the gondolier’s nickname. The photograph was taken by Richard Freer Austin, husband of Harriet Alyne Austin (née Hulton) elder sister of William Stokes Hulton.
