Summary
Mid 19th century turned hardwood truncheon in two articulated sections joined by metal rings to enable the short end at the top to be swung around independently as required. The handle of the truncheon is turned to provide an effective grip for the user. Stamped twice with 'BERWICK' and with a coronet above on the end section. These clubs descended from the war flail, often used by German and American police and in Britain for law enforcement. Gamekeepers and their assistants would use these against organised poaching rings.
Provenance
Attingham collection; purchased by the National Trust from Hall's Auctioneers in Shrewsbury in March 2003.
