Summary
Lace trimmed velvet bag. Crimson silk velvet. Black silk warp; purple silk weft; magenta silk warp cut pile. a) Gold metal thread braid .2 cm; b) gold and metal thread lace 15 mm. Cream silk satin weave. Hand and machine sewn, circular base interlined with card. Three pockets inside, drawstring opening with trim b) sewn at top inside and as edging three times. Found in trunk carefully wrapped and tissued by Lady Berwick. The velvet has worn rather badly which might suggest an earlier date.
Provenance
Possibly part of the Coronation Robes used by Ellen, 7th Lady Berwick (d.1934) for the 1902 Coronation of Edward VII; bequeathed to the National Trust by Edith Teresa Hulton, Lady Berwick (1890-1972).
