Summary
Lace and embroidered muslin flounce. a) Off white cotton thread bobbin lace, mesh ground, gimp motifs. Design; repeat 20 mm. Flower spray and sprig 30 mm. b) embroidered muslin. Two qualities of muslin are used. But same pattern. Design; twisted cable 12 mm. a) Straight footing, scalloped heading, seamed to b). Cut either end. One end has a buttonholed loop. Handwritten note by Lady Berwick reads: 'Old Lille, thick, no value'. Made in Lille, France, circa 1900.
Provenance
Found in envelope in white box with letter and Note. Label on Box A) 'Old lace to be repaired'. B) 'Burano lace - Mrs Hulton' (only Burano piece identified is ATT/TC/156). Found in box 14 pieces of lace ATT/TC/181-194. 8th Lady Berwick collection; bequeathed to the National Trust by Edith Teresa Hulton, Lady Berwick (1890-1972).
