Summary
Four plain weave linen huckaback kitchen cloths of early 20th century British manufacture. Huckaback Linen is a linen weave exhibiting a small seed-like pattern, usually used for towels. Linen was used most often for kitchen cloths as the fibres would stand rough treatment e.g. stain removal and boiling in the wash-house. There would be different cloths for different purposes – the obvious being tea towels for drying, but also covers for bowls, pans etc, cloths for the sideboard and dresser, also for what was called the ‘dressing table’ – not in the bedroom but where dishes were dressed before being sent to the dining room.
Provenance
Purchased by the National Trust for Attingham Park from Morley in 2000.
