Summary
One plain weave linen kitchen cloth of early 20th century British manufacture. Linen was used most often for kitchen cloths as the fibres would stand rough treatment e.g. stain removal and boiling in the wash-house. There would be different cloths for different purposes – the obvious being tea towels for drying, but also covers for bowls, pans etc, cloths for the sideboard and dresser, also for what was called the ‘dressing table’ – not in the bedroom but where dishes were dressed before being sent to the dining room.
