Summary
One of five plain weave kitchen cloths, monogrammed AM in red, machine hemmed, with two loops for hanging, and short strengthening seam. Early 20th century British manufacture. In the kitchen there would be different cloths for different purposes – the obvious being tea towels for drying, but also covers for bowls, pans etc, cloths for the sideboard and dresser, also for what was called the ‘dressing table’ – not in the bedroom but where dishes were dressed before being sent to the dining room.
Provenance
Purchased by the National Trust for Attingham Park from P. Ward at the Newark Fair in 2000
