Summary
One of three blue, ivory and gold Jacquard woven silk lampas tight covers to a daybed. The aqua-ivory plain weave 'Dupion' was made in Lyon, France, in 1911. The cover has a neo-classical design featuring Neptune and either Amphitrite or Amymonie above their respective attributes amidst flowers and trees, garlands and beading. The cover consists of pale blue, grey braid 2cm, self fabric piping, self fabric buttons and linen dyed blue. It has been hand and machine sewn. The base is tacked to the frame over padding at the head and trimmed. The squab cushion has flock filling and is trimmed. The bolster is fabric sewn over a flock filling and trimmed. The Jacquard has an ivory and mid blue/faded to aqua silk warp and an ivory and gold silk weft with a heavier count. The fabric is warp faced satin ground, with an unbalanced weft with plain weave motifs. The fabric was woven of a loom width of 60.5cm, straight drop repeat of 159cm x loom width. The fabric is descorated with passementerie braid and drops of 12cm. The braid has blue, ivory and gold silk parchment loops, in gold and blue silk. The centre is striped. Provenance
Lord Berwick (1877-1947), before his marriage in 1919, had the silk woven in Lyon, copying an earlier silk introduced by the 3rd Lord Berwick (1773-1842) between 1827-1842 also woven in Lyon. Attingham collection; bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
