Summary
A 19th century roughly hewn wooden chopping block consisting of a large flat oak log on a tripod base. The block would have been used by a scullery maid for butchering meat, poultry and game. Most probably it was used in the scullery. The scullery maid would need to learn to cut joints properly for the various dishes. Oak or beech would be used to make the surface. A tree trunk would have been procured from the estate and the block made by the estate carpenter.
Provenance
Purchased by the National Trust for the kitchen at Attingham Park at Newark in 2000.
