Summary
A mahogany open armchair, one of a set of seven mahogany chairs, English, circa 1790. The standard chairs NT 608303.1.1 - .1.6, the open armchair NT 608303.2. This open armchair with a moulded shield-shaped back centred by an elaborate pierced ovoid splat, carved with a medallion centred by a patera, and with bellflowers, foliated scrolls and bull-rushes above a fan. The arm short and outswept, and raised on scrolling arm supports either side of the bowed seat, upholstered in dark green velvet fixed with brass studs. On moulded and tapering square-section front legs and rectangular-section outswept rear legs, joined by an 'H'-shaped stretcher and a higher rear stretcher.
