Forty-seven oak, ash and rush-seated ladderback chairs, in three separate groups: 1. a set of twenty-one oak rush-seated 'Clissett' chairs, English, made by Neville Neal (1925 - 2000), 1965, after designs by Ernest Gimson (1864 - 1919). All twenty-one chairs [NT 608293.1 - .21] stamped by the maker. 2. a set of twenty-five rush-seated chairs of oak and ash, English, mid-20th century, made by Edward Gardiner (1880 - 1958) of Priors Marston, Warwickshire, after a design of Ernest Gimson (1864 - 1919) [NT 608293.2.1 - .25]. 3. a single oak and rush-seated open armchair, English, mid-20th century, made by Edward Gardiner (1880 - 1958) of Priors Marston, Warwickshire, after a design of Ernest Gimson (1864 - 1919)
Provenance
608293.1 - twenty-one (originally twenty-three) chairs ordered on 30 January 1965 by Sir George Trevelyan, Principal of the Shropshire Adult Education College at Attingham Park, for use in the Students' Dining Room. They cost £161 14s. A gift to the National Trust from the Shropshire Adult Education College when it left Attingham in the 1970s. 608293.2.1 - .25 and 608293.3 - ordered from Edward Gardiner c. 1950 by Sir George Trevelyan, Principal of the Shropshire Adult Education College at Attingham Park, for use in the Students' Dining Room. A gift to the National Trust from the Shropshire Adult Education College when it left Attingham in the 1970s.
