Summary
A mahogany cellaret, or wine cooler, England, early to mid-19th century. Of sarcophagus form, the central rectangular section of the hinged lid with a beaded edge. The tapering sides with bead-edged panels and raised on stepped, spreading square feet fitted with metal and white ceramic castors. The interior with brass lid support and brass lock.
Provenance
Believed to be 3rd Lord Berwick collection: William Noel-Hill, 3rd Baron Berwick (1773 - 1842). Listed in the Inventory taken at Attingham Park in 1913 (p. 84), in the Probate Valuation taken in 1947 as a 'Residuary Effect' (p. 30) and in the 1954 Insurance Valuation (p. 9). Attingham collection; bequeathed to the National Trust by Edith Teresa Hulton, Lady Berwick (1890-1972) and transferred by HM Treasury to the National Trust in 1972.
