Summary
A rosewood and giltwood console table, English, circa 1820, one of a pair [the other NT 608160.1.2], its white marble top NT 608160.1.3. Standing before a giltwood-framed pier glass, NT 608160.2.1. In the manner of Gillows of Lancaster. Having a rosewood and mahogany-veneered frieze inlaid with brass arabesques, foliated scrolls and rinceau, and with four projecting rectangular 'tablets'. Raised to the front on a pair of foliate-carved and petal-topped scroll legs and on a rosewood-veneered platform base.
Provenance
Believed to have been made especially for the Drawing Room at Attingham under the instruction of the 2nd Lord Berwick, having survived the sale of 1827 (pp. 80 - 81, Lots 102 - 105). Listed in the Inventory taken at Attingham Park in 1861 (p. 90), in the Probate Valuation taken there in 1947 as an 'heirloom' (p. 8), and in the Inventory taken circa 1953 (p. 29, no. 8). Probably 2nd Lord Berwick collection: Thomas Noel Hill, 2nd Baron Berwick (1770 – 1832). By descent bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and partial contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877 - 1947) and transferred to the National Trust on 15th May 1953.
