Summary
A mahogany and ormolu-mounted bateau lit or lit en bateau, French, circa 1810. Comprising a pair of ends and a pair of side rails. The ends with a scroll-over toprail above large panels with applied mouldings. The sides applied with various ormolu mounts cast as gods, gryphons, sphinxes, urns, butterflies and sprays of flowers. The rails with conforming applied plaques. Raised on iron and brass castors.
Provenance
Purchased by the 8th Lord Berwick. Listed in the Inventory taken in 1947 as an 'heirloom' (p. 10) and in the Inventory taken c. 1953 (p. 11). Bequeathed with the estate, house and partial contents of Attingham Park by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) and transferred to the National Trust on 15th May 1953.
