Summary
A painted satinwood window seat, English, circa 1810, in the manner of Gillows. With a chair-back at each end, formed from scroll-over uprights with bands of spiral-reeding and with a horizontal splat formed from two bars joined by a pair of circular bosses. The cane seat with a silk-covered cushion and within painted seat rails. Raised on four ball- and baluster-turned tapering legs fitted with brass caps and castors. Painted with black and white lotus flowers, fluting, lines and rosettes.
Provenance
2nd Lord Berwick collection: Thomas Noel Hill, 2nd Baron Berwick (1770 – 1832). Entered into the 1827 auction of some of the contents of Attingham Park as Lot 125 (p. 47) but presumably bought in at £99 15s 0d. Thence listed in the Inventories taken at Attingham Park in 1861 (p. 84), 1913 (p. 86), 1947 (p. 10) and 1953 (p. 4). Bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and partial contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) and transferred to the National Trust on 15th May 1953.
