Summary
A floor cloth of painted and varnished linen flax with geometric designs of octagons and rosettes. The floor cloth features grey, black, beige, and soft blue colours. The floor cloth comprises of a main piece plus four strips leading to doorways and is based closely on the design, colours and size of the original oilcloth floorcloth for the Entrance Hall at Attingham. This was described in the 1827 sale catalogue, when the contents of Attingham were put up for sale to pay off the 2nd Lord Berwick's (1770-1832) debts. The sale catalogue (p.158) mentions a 'Handsome square piece of stone and slate colour octagon panelled roset-pattern floor cloth' in the Entrance Hall. Another record appears in a 1861 inventory of Attingham where the Entrance Hall is described as having a 'Floor cloth 21 x 20ft'. Once the replica floorcloth was worn and replaced in 2017 it was cut into smaller sections for interpretation.
