Summary
Print, lithograph, Mrs Martha Ford (1743/4-1830) and her son Patrick Johnstone (1775/6-1803) formerly called Mrs Johnstone and her Son (after George Romney) by Walter Alfred Cox (b.1862 - c.1908). Published in 1911, after the original half-length portrait Romney in the Tate Gallery collection. Seated, turned to the right, wearing turban, red gown and black lace trimmed mantle. Child rests against mother, wearing plain night gown and red shoes. Published 1911, by Henry Graves and Co.Ltd, 6, Pall Mall, London. Printed in Paris by Maglia and Co. Pasted to rectangular card backing, card mount. Formerly known as Mrs Johnstone and son but according to Alex Kidson, Complete Works of George Romney (see no.470, p.225) this is now recognised as Mrs Martha Ford and her son Patrick. Martha Ford was the mistress of Governor George Johnstone (1730-1787) Governor of West Florida (1763-1767) whom she accompanied to West Florida in 1764. They separated in 1778.
