Caption
The Reverend. Richard Noel-Hill, 4th Lord Berwick (1774-1848) entered the Church in 1799 and a year later married Frances Mostyn-Owen. A new rectory was built for him at Berrington on the Attingham estate, where he enjoyed the life of a country squire. Like his brothers, he was incapable of economy, prompting Thomas to describe him as ‘so very idle & extravagant of his wife, indolent and ignorant of management’. A severe speech impediment which also affected other members of the family, must have made preaching difficult. Although already 68 when he inherited, he nevertheless moved into Attingham with his several unmarried daughters. Apparently he did not entertain, but is said to have ‘swallowed more wine than any other man in the County’.
