Summary
One of twelve circular porcelain dessert plates with shallow well and wide flattened rim. The centre field is painted in sepia tones with a battle scene from Emperor Napoleon I's Russian campaign of 1812, described in detail on the reverse of the rim. Wide buff coloured edge, gilt border of oak leaves in ribbon reserves and gilt line borders. Made by Pierre-Louis Dagoty circa 1815. Pierre-Louis Dagoty became the leading Paris factory by 1807, supplying the Empress Josephine and the Imperial Court at Versailles and Compiegne. The factory survived until 1867.
Provenance
Believed to have been acquired by 3rd Lord Berwick: William Noel Hill, 3rd Baron Berwick (1773 -1842) who had been in Italy as British envoy and ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples and the Two Sicilies, from the collection of Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples. By descent bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
Marks and inscriptions
On the reverse of the rim: 'Combat d'Ostrovno. le 25 Aout. 1812. Le Roi de Naples arrive a la hauteur d'Ostrovno, apres plusieurs attaques vivement disputees. ordonna au general Ornano une charge de cavalerie qui decida du succes. l'ennemi perdit 8 pieces de canon. 800 prisonniers, 5 a 6000 des siens tues ou blesses resterent sur le champ de bataille'.
