Summary
A woman's pagoda-style umbrella made from silk twill, brass, wood and ivory. The umbrella canopy is made from green silk twill, decorated with a striped border in cream and green. It has an elongated engraved brass ferrule and attached brass closing ring, with an ebonised wood shaft and articulated carved handle, a carved ivory handle tip and brass fittings. The ribs are part baleen / part metal and the spokes are covered with brass tips. A note attached to the umbrella shaft by the donor historically reads, "Green Umbrella. 35. Told waterfront stallholder who put it up. Period Guide Plate 82. Fashionable Lady Plates 58,75,88. Phyllis Cunnington. Plates 161, 162, 174. P381", which represents her research on the item in terms of style and date.
