Summary
A woman's shawl made from black silk chiffon, velvet and cotton thread. The shawl is in the "devore" style, otherwise known as a burnout fabric. This is where a mixed-fibre material undergoes a chemical process to dissolve the cellulose fibres, creating a pattern against more solidly woven fabric. It was a very popular process in the 1920's and 1930's. The shawl, which is semi-circular, has a velvet abstract floral pattern in shades of taupe, red, yellow, blue, green and pink. It also has a long knotted black cotton thread fringe.
Provenance
Gift of Miss E.M.Kirkpatrick.
