Summary
A woman's corset in the "waspie" style made from white cotton sateen. The "waspie" is a shallow corset which is situated only on the waistline, unlike other larger corsets which support the bust and also often extend to the hip line. This corset is constructed using 14 bonings strips running from top to bottom hem and fastens with four brass hook and eye fastenings centre front, intact. The back of the corset has ten brass eyelets for a cotton drawstring. A fragment of the original cotton drawstring has survived, the rest having been replaced historically with a much more modern and clean drawstring. A makers stamp inside the bodice reads, "Best French Sewn. S&S London. Genuine A LA Sirene corset. Manufactured in France". A further handwritten marking inside the lining reads "McDonald-Tyler".
