Summary
Tempera painting on plaster, The Tale of Sir Degrevaunt: The Wedding Feast by Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (Birmingham 1833 - London 1898), 1860. One of three paintings or frescos created directly onto plaster by Edward Burne-Jones, see NT 60138 & NT 60139. The original intention to create a series of seven was not carried out. The subject comes from 'The Tale of Sir Degrevaunt'. 'The Wedding Feast', guests seated at table serving women carrying food and wine to the left, two seated figures right foreground are reading a song book. The two seated figures wearing coronets are William and Jane Morris. The story of Sir Degrevaunt was published in the Camden Society's volume of Thornton Romances in 1844. It was a favourite of Morris and Burne-Jones. Glazed with sheet glass in gold frame.
