Summary
Tempera painting on plaster, The Tale of Sir Degrevaunt: The Wedding Ceremony (The Marriage of Sir Degrevaunt and Lady Melidor) by Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (Birmingham 1833 - London 1898), 1860. One of three paintings or murals painted directly onto plaster by Edward Burne-Jones (see NT 60139, 60140). The original intention to create a series of seven was not carried out. The subject comes from 'The Tale of Sir Degrevaunt'. 'The Wedding Ceremony' from 15th century Thornton Romances which had been published by the Camden Society in 1844. On the left Sir Degrevaunt wearing a gold cloak with fur hem places wedding ring on the woman's finger. She is wearing a long golden brown gown. Between the couple is another figure and behind the woman stand three bridesmaids wearing floral headbands and holding healdic sticks.
