Summary
Silhouette, Edward Phelips V, MP (1725-1797), British (English) School. Side profile of a man on cut paper the white paper has been crudely worked and lies about 2-3 mm away from the black backing; on reverse, handwritten inscription in ink ‘Ed Phelips Esquire / of / Montacute / M P For / Somersetshire / Died Apr 1797 at Cattistock’, a yellow spot sticker in top right hand corner with handwritten ‘7’. condition - fair.
Provenance
This item was gifted to the NT at Montacute by Montacute’s ‘Hidden in History’ volunteer costume group through their leader, Elizabeth Rendell who was born on the Newton Surmerville estate near Yeovil in Somerset. She and her family worked for the Rawlins, owners of Newton Surmaville and descendants of Rhoda Harbin, nee Phelips, daughter of Edward Phelips V (1725-1797), who married into the Harbin family in the 18th century. Mrs Rawlins died in 2007 and Elizabeth Rendell purchased this item from the heir.
