Summary
Sampler, undated, second quarter of nineteenth century, Elizabeth Barratt. Linen embroidered with coloured silks using cross and tent stitches. Central verse surrounded by motifs probably copied from published woolwork patterns - greyhound, Flower bouquets, pheasants, a leaping tiger, snakes and two palm trees. Repeating rosebud border. Verses -'When from the world retir'd Apart to dress the Temples of my Heart To make it Beautiful and fair Fit for the One residing there Nature though blooming gay and sweet Is false and full of dire deceit With all its gaudy show For oft in vale of Mountain steep Do Tygers lurk and serpents creep.
