Summary
Sampler, dated 1822, Sarah Mitchell. Fine linen or cotton gauze embroidered with coloured silks using cross and Algerian eye stitches. Verse surmounted by a zig-zag rose-bud border; beneath - name and date with flower basket either side. Verse -'The Needlework our Names record. Or Marbles tell our Worth, Yet all those transient Honours die as Natures sickliest Birth. Would Bounteous Heaven indulge my Prayer, I'd frame a nobler Choice, Nor living wish the pompous Pile, Nor dead regret the Loss. In thy fair Book of life Divine, My God Inscribe my Name.
