Summary
30 Hour, striking lantern clock in engraved brass case. Probably Flemish and made c.1620/1690. Two-train, iron, posted frame construction movement with long, two-seconds pendulum, a unique horizontal semi-dead-beat escapement, and count wheel hour-striking on a bell mounted above the frame. The pendulum is of flat iron strip type, with a brass faced pendulum bob and there are two brass-cased lead weights on single line chains. The dial is of engraved brass and has roman numerals and a single brass hour hand. The iron frame is covered with thin engraved brass plates and the bell above the movement is covered with a thin brass bell-shaped cover. Note: The clock originally dates from about 1620 and would have had a verge and balance wheel escapement. The striking train is probably original but the going train has probably mostly been replaced when the escapement was changed, and the dial was altered and the centre moved down, with the necessary re-engraving at the same time.
