Full description
Diana Manners was daughter of Henry Manners, 8th Duke of Rutland. She was a well known socialite, writer and acress. This image shows her aged 11 and was drawn by her mother, Violet Manners, while taking part in a play with friends and family. The 'VG' monogram stands for 'Violet Granby' - Henry and Violet were style Marquess and Marchiness of Granby until they succeed to the Dukedom in 1906.
Provenance
Frank Green was a family friend of the Manners family who took Diana and her siblings on trips to museums and galleries in London and gave them numerous gifts: "Our fairy godfather...a big-fortuned eccentric who taught us about furniture and architecture and ornament" ('The Rainbow Comes & Goes', Diana Cooper 1958). Lady Diana and her mother also visited Treasurer's House on at least one occasion. Gift of Frank Green with Treasurer's House in 1930.
