Summary
Plaster sculpture, Sir Henry Wentworth Dyke Acland (Killerton 1815 – Oxford 1900) by Alexander Munro (1825-1871), circa 1857. A bust on a carved pine pedestal of Dr Acland, Regius Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford. This is one of three plaster versions of the 1857 marble portrait bust now in The Acland Nuffield Hospital, Oxford which was commissioned from the artist after Acland had had a shipwreck on his way home from Madeira in the Channel near to St Aldhelm's Head in the steam ship 'The Tyne'. It was presented to his wife, Sarah, by Pauline Trevleyan on behalf of 75 Oxford friends. Acland became the guardian of the artist's children.
