Summary
Piece of iron railing with note that reads: 'Broken off by the mob and used as a missile in an attempt to break up a meeting during Aberdeen election 1917 when I was speaking for Pethick Lawrence', signed 'CT' (Charles Trevelyan). Trevelyan was supporting Pethick Lawrence as the Union of Democratic Control’s candidate in the South-Aberdeen bi-election. The UDC was opposed to the war in Europe and was founded in the belief that foreign policy should be determined by popular will. Towards the end of the war Pethick Lawrence was conscripted but sent to Sussex to work on a farm as a conscientious objector.
