Summary
Top stone of a Romano-British quern or handmill used for the daily preparation of flour. This form of quern is known as a beehive quern as its form resembles the straw skeps once used as beehives. The stone would turn on a central spindle located in an accompanying bottom stone. A handle fitted into the hole in the side of the quern was used to turn the top stone and the operators other hand used to feed the grain into the funnel shaped hole around the spindle.
