Summary
Bronze sculpture, Diane de Gabies also known as Diana Robing by Ferdinand Barbedienne (Saint-Martin-de-Fresnay, Calvados 1810 - Paris 1892). One of two full-length bronze statues of Grecian figures cast by the fondeure F. Barbedienne. French. The original marble statue was excavated by Gavin Hamilton in 1792 on Prince Borghese's property at Gabii outside Rome and was displayed in the gardener's house (now Casino dell'Orologio) in the grounds of the Villa Borghese. It was purcahsed by Napoleon, brother-in-law of Prince Camillo Borghese, and is now in the Louvre. On the advice of Sir Thomas Lawrence a plaster cast was placed in the entrance hall of the Athenaeum in London.
