Summary
A mahogany open armchair, circa 1825, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster or Gillow & Co. of Oxford Street, London. With scroll-over toprail. The one-piece back and seat upholstered nd covered with pink silk damask trimmed with silk wrapped cord and edged with pink gimp. Underside covered with black glazed fabric. Raised on curving 'X'-shaped supports carved with fleur-de-lys where they meet, with white ceramic castors. A drawing of a very similar chair, described as 'Spanish', was ordered by P. Horracks Esq. from Gillow & Co. and was illustrated in their Estimate Sketch Book on 25th October 1823 [Stuart].
