Summary
Sculpture, yellow marble, Pedestal for statue of Livia Augusta (58 - 29 BC) as Ceres. Pedestal for a Greek mainland marble antique statue of Livia Augusta as Ceres, on marble base and yellow marble pedestal. Statue 'represents Livia, or a Julio-Claudian pincess, as Ceres; early Imperial period, after Greek IV century originals'(Vermeule). Origin unknown. Early sources - Dallaway and Michaelis. Lack of information as to how Henry Hoare (1705-1785) obtained it suggests it was early acquisition. Description of figure in London Chronicle, 18 June 1757 (Woodbridge 1982) - originally in the Temple of Ceres (Flora) ? Literature also in James Dallaway Anecdotes of the Arts, 1800, p.384 and Of Stauary and Sculpture, 1816, p.314. Restorations to nose, right arm, left arm parts of base.
