Summary
A round stoneware dish with green glaze, decorated with the names and national animals of Australia (Kangaroo), New Zealand (Kiwi), Canada (Beaver), Newfoundland (Great seal), India (Elephant) and South Africa (Springbok). Underneath 'British Empire' is a depiction of a lion. 'E II R' is in the middle of the dish and the back is stamped 'Wade Coronation 1953 '6'. Made by Wade to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Queen Elizabeth's Coronation took place on 2nd June 1953 at Westminster Abbey. Commemorative ceramics were produced in large numbers, but it is unusual for a piece from this time to make such a direct reference to the British Empire, particularly since India (depicted on the dish) had gained independence from British rule in 1947 and the reach of the Empire was changing following the Second World War.
Provenance
An item from the Pamela Ward Collection, left to the National Trust in Miss Ward's will in 1994.
