This simple blue blazer, given to Joyce Wethered (1901–97) in 1975, when she became the first British woman to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, represents the trailblazing career of a golfing legend. Wethered started playing golf on family holidays, and between the ages of 19 and 23 she won the English Women’s Championship five times. She quickly built a reputation as one of the most skilled players on the circuit. Her victory in the 1929 British Women’s Championships was a particularly notable success. She had come out of retirement for the opportunity to play on the Old Course at St Andrews, Scotland, home of a number of clubs but most famously The Royal and Ancient – one of the oldest and most prestigious in the world and, until 2015, male-only. Despite her success, Wethered often faced such prejudiced constraints. Even the restrictive clothing that female golfers were required to wear frustrated her. Wethered competed in Britain and America until her marriage to Sir John Heathcoat-Amory, 3rd Baronet (1894–1972), in 1937, thereafter remaining an inspiration to young female players across the world.
