Summary
Watercolour on paper, The Proposed Design by William Burges for the Smoking Room at Cardiff Castle by Axel Herman Haig (Katthammarsvik 1835 – Southsea, 1921), circa 1870. The picture contains figures in Medieval garb - a typical feature of the workshop of William Burges RA (London 1827 – Kensington 1881) - who are, incongerously, puffing on pipes! Painted by Axel Haig, a long time collaborator with Burges. The picture may, originally, have been presented to John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute (1847 - 1900), Burges's great patron; the Smoking Room at Cardiff Castle was one of their first projects together. It is framed and glazed.
