Summary
Watercolour on paper, Elizabeth Woodville, Queen Dowager of Edward IV delivering up her Son Prince Richard, Duke of York (1473-1483) to Cardinal Thomas Bourchier (1404-1486), Archbishop of Canterbury by George Cattermole (Dickleburgh 1800 - Clapham 1868). Story on back. There is a framed sketch (P/65) which goes with this watercolour. Cattermole specialised in watercolours of historical scenes, particularly from Walter Scott or Shakespeare. He moved to London in 1819 and exhibited at the Royal Academy between then and 1827 and at the British Institution in 1827 but most of his works were shown at the Society of Painters in Water-Colours where he was an associate from 1822, becoming a full member in 1833. He was not successful at painting in oil. He won a medal of honour at the 1855 Exposition Universalle in Paris 1855 where he had exhibited 11 works.
