Summary
A parquetry octagonal centre table, English, circa 1860. The stunning top arranged in geometric concentric patterns with a large central stellar motif surrounded by eight smaller versions and then a further twenty-four yet smaller versions, all within an outer band of cube parquetry flanked by strips of crossbanding, the effect is achieved by using a broad selection of exotic timbers, including ebony, satinwood, rosewood, coromandel, walnut and palm wood, the facetted edge of the top is chequer-banded and there are four true and four dummy drawers in the frieze, all with ebonised walnut knob handles, the base is quite conventional, in walnut and with a bulbous turned column and hipped, foliate-carved downswept legs with scroll feet and castors.
