Summary
An oak library table, English, circa 1860, by Gillows. The rectangular top with moulded edge and two frieze drawers, each with six compartments, opposing dummy drawers, all with knob handles, raised on twin square-column end supports with incised line detail and sleigh feet carved with rosettes and reeded arched ends, joined by a central cross-stretcher and standing on sunken castors, drawer stamped GILLOW & CO 10039, also stamped to underside 10039.
Full description
By the end of the 18th century the Lancaster firm of Gillow had a London shop and were one of the leading cabinet-makers in Britain. In 1813 the third generation of the Gillow family sold the businesses in London and Lancaster. As Gillow & Co. the firm continued to flourish and to export furniture across the world right through the Victorian period, including the important commission to make furniture for the New Palace of Westminster, until 1897 when it became Waring & Gillow Ltd.

Purchased by the National Trust at Bearnes of Torquay, Devon on February 1st 1984 for £400.
