Summary
One of a set of fifteen mahogany chairs, English, circa 1900. Of George III style and including a pair of armchairs, most of the seats upholstered in floral needlework worked by Herbert Newton Wethered (father of Joyce, Lady Amory), each chair with a different central vignette, all with elaborate pierced interlaced splats and moulded toprail centred with a trellis-work panel and with a scroll flourish at each end, the uprights carved with beaded edges, each bowed and padded seat standing on square chamfered legs also carved with beaded edges, the pair of open armchairs with inswept supports and scroll terminals. The seat vignette depicts an exotic bird within a red cartouche.
