Summary
Sphere as part of a Celestial globe, the sphere is covered in paper with a brass horizontal ring. The Celestial globe is mounted on a Chippendale mahogany tripod stand on brass castors (534389.2) . The Celestial globe, paired with a terrestrial globe (532976.1). Plaque on the globe reads ‘To the Rev Nevil Maskelyne D D F R S. Astromener Royal This new British celestial globe containing the positions of nearly 6,000 stars, clusters, nebular, plantary nebulae etc. Correctly computed and laid down for the year 1800 from the latest obeservations and discoveries by Dr D Maskelyne, Dr Herlichel, The Rev Mr Wollersotn. I, respectfuly dedicated by his most obedient, noble, servants W. and S M Bardin’. Smaller plaque reads ‘Manufactured & sold wholesale and retail by W & T. M. Bardin. 16 Sailsbury Square Fleet Street, London’.
Provenance
Presented to the National Trust by Sir Montgomerie Fairfax-Lucy (1896 – 1965), two years after the death of his father, Sir Henry Ramsay-Fairfax, 3rd Bt (1870 – 1944), with Charlecote Park and its chief contents, in 1946.
